I focus on factors related to energy metabolism in cardiomyocytes and am trying to establish the novel therapeutic strategy for heart disease. Although cardiomyocytes are continuously beating and consume vast energy under strong mechanical stress, their lifetime are very long and amazingly they rarely turn to malignant. In order to investigate the physiological and genetic factors leading to this unique property, lab members are working on various approaches based on both classical biochemical methods and cutting-edge instruments using abundant funds. In addition, we are collaborating with many labs in other universities and research facilities beyond the field.
Each student has a different background such as engineering and life science, but teachers and experimental assistants gently instruct us even basic techniques.
As other aspects, there are many MD teachers with various specialties, so we can feel the clinical significance compared with other laboratories. I recommend this lab for those who want to do basic research, clinical application and drug discovery.
Why choose this laboratory as a foreigner, or as a Japanese student?
As an undergraduate student, I worked mainly on DNA or RNA. When I joined this lab, I had almost zero experience with protein handling and workflow. However, with patient guidance and the equipped nature of this lab, I was able to gradually grow accustomed to it, as well as gaining the ability and knowledge of many techniques and methods regarding both DNA and protein work.
In this lab, you can learn about many areas regarding biological studies and biochemical field, in addition to biotechnology, genetics, medicine and additionally, basic research methodology. If you want to have a fundamental knowledge in research concerning biochemistry and cellular biology, this is the lab for you.
Most importantly, the environment here is very friendly, everyone is very helpful and nice. Also, there are a lot of activities that you can enjoy beside studying and working.
